Job Summary

The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support counselor will be responsible for providing focused psychological and psychosocial care, including mental health case management for individuals/ community people, as part of IMC’s Mobile Health Teams/ static primary health care centers (HSCs), in the targeted areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide focused psychological and psychosocial care to individuals, families, and communities.
  • Clinical management of priority mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) conditions, with collaboration of mhGAP-HIG trained primary health care staff.
  • Carry out assessment, diagnosis, and clinical management (non-pharmacological) for those identified with priority MNS conditions.
  • Identify establish and strengthen referral pathways for clients to ensure they are linked to needed services.
  • Assist with the integration of MHPSS services into Primary Health Care.
  • Organizing psychosocial support activities such as individual and/or group psychoeducation and support regarding stress and anxiety/fear, loss and grief, promotion of positive coping mechanisms, and more.
  • Provision of individual psychosocial support, including PFA, mental health case management which is based on the “biopsychosocial” framework for treatment and focuses predominantly on restoring mental health and normal functioning for individuals. MHCM involves: Assessment: process for assessing the client’s total situation and addressing their needs and problems.; Planning, Referring, Refer and Monitoring.
  • The MHPSS Counselors will further provide more intermediate psychosocial support such as counseling and brief evidence-based therapies.
  • Prepare and deliver trainings for the purposes of capacity-building on psychosocial support including PFA and case management trainings where appropriate.
  • Adhere to all IMC protocols and procedures surrounding case documentation confidentiality and security.
  • Liaise with general practitioners’ psychiatrists’ psychologists and other healthcare professionals to support clients in need of MHPSS through the referral diagnosis and treatment process.
  • Conduct other MHPSS-related activities as requested

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree required in a field related to the social sciences, psychology, social work, or counselling,
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in an MHPSS related role,
  • Relevant capacity building trainings and experience in clinical management of mental health cases are preferable,
  • Communication skills and knowledge of local communities.
  • Knowledge of English, Dari, and Pashto Languages.
  • Preference will be given to local candidates.
